NEA Audience Research Summation

During the time I spent researching into audience behaviour within the 16-25-year-old audience and asking questions to my focus group, I learnt a lot of useful information to help keep my documentary interesting and ways to get the target audience interacting with online content that links to the documentary.

After asking my focus groups a few questions, I discovered that they all watch documentaries, some more regularly than others, this ranges from one every two weeks to once every three months. This shows that the intended target audience for my documentary is not as likely to watch documentaries regularly so I will have to make my documentary interesting and cover lots of content in the first few minutes to make them want to watch on.

I also found out from my focus group that they are all very likely to interact with the documentary on social media platforms such as Twitter, to talk about the show and share their opinions, allowing for me to realise how important it is to show the audience how to interact with the show within the first few minutes and on my website.

In my focus group, the favourite genre of documentaries is mystery/murder, so they are all familiar with the codes and conventions which would follow in this genre and the style that I want to portray in my documentary.

During my research which I did online, I found out that 16-25-year-olds consume 69 minutes of live TV a day, this would mean that I would have to incorporate as much into the intro to make it as interesting as possible to keep the viewer watching, as this target audience is less likely to watch TV live and more likely to use streaming platforms like Netflix.

From doing this research on my focus group and using statistics from online I have realised that I need to offer a documentary that is captivating and provides a platform for the audience to use to express their opinions on the show. I also realised it is a lot harder to get the intended target audience to watch the documentary due to other platforms providing content that is easier to access such as Youtube and the number of different social media platforms as use of entertainment.
